From Asakusa to Nikko/ Kinugawa Onsen. The N100 series offers a lounge, private compartments, and a comfortable salon.
The six-car train arrives at the express platform in Asakusa. It has a capacity of 212 passengers and offers six types of seating: lounge, compartment, and premium salon.
Cars 1 and 6 are equipped with lounge areas and private compartments. Only these two cars feature wide side windows. Cars 3 to 5 are designated for standard seating.
The journey from Tokyo to Nikko takes about one hour and fifty minutes, and to Kinugawa Onsen—about two hours. The train's design is inspired by the Yomeimon gate of Nikko Toshogu Shrine, with window frames reminiscent of Kanuma’s wooden kumiko latticework and Edo-period bamboo weaving.
The train model is the N100 series. It was awarded the Good Design Award in 2023 and the Blue Ribbon Award in 2024 by the Railway Association.
The most spacious private suite among all private high-speed trains. The front and side windows offer a view of the tracks ahead. Decorative lighting is inspired by the “Guri-mon” pattern carved on the columns of the Yomeimon Gate at Nikko Toshogu Shrine. Crew members enter and exit to patrol the train.
The walls are finished in tea tones inspired by Edo-period color names, while the floor is covered with a blue carpet. This color scheme is unique to these four rooms. The table arrangement can be changed to create either a round table or a face-to-face configuration.
The interior design is inspired by the Nikko Kanaya Hotel—the oldest operating resort hotel in Japan—and former embassy villas. Lounge guests may use the café counter without a room card.
For the first time on the Tobu Railway—automatically controlled seats. Thanks to the rear panel design, you can recline without disturbing the person behind you.
There is no dining car. All meals and beverages on board are provided by the “GOEN CAFÉ SPACIA X” buffet café in the first car. The name GOEN plays on the image of the five Nikko monkeys at the counter and the Japanese word “goen,” meaning “connection” or “fate.”
From 2026, the selection will focus on exclusive items available only on board, such as signature Nikko Coffee, local craft beer, miso soup made with Nikko miso and yuba from Uwasawa Umetaro Shoten, as well as original sandwiches. The menu is updated regularly.
Passengers in the first and sixth cars may make purchases without a numbered ticket (in the sixth car, takeout only). For cars two through five, an online numbered ticket is required; approximately twenty are issued in total.
Tickets for high-speed express trains go on sale one month before the travel date, starting at 9:00 AM. There is no lottery; tickets are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. The Cockpit Suite, with only one compartment per train, is often sold out immediately after sales begin. For special seats (Cockpit Lounge, Box Seat, Compartment, Cockpit Suite), a special seat surcharge is added to the ticket price and the standard express fee. In the onboard café, priority is given to passengers in cars 1 and 6; guests in cars 2 to 5 require an online ticket with a number, and the quantity is limited. For private charters, Tobu Railway introduced a system in March 2024 that allows trains to be used for special or group charter trips.
