Water Remembers — Teshima, the Island of Springs and Heartbeats
The name Teshima can be translated as "island of abundance." Its source is the pure spring water born on the slopes of Mount Dan. Among the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, where rice fields are rare, it is this water that for centuries has nourished the terraced rice paddies that have become the symbol of the island.
On Teshima, water takes many forms. In the Teshima Art Museum, it seems to be born from the very floor, slowly gathering into droplets and then disappearing again. On the Karato shore, a small pavilion carefully preserves recordings of heartbeats from people around the world. And in the forests of Mount Dan, the wind touches bells inscribed with the names of those who are no longer here.
Spring water, the beating of the heart, the sound of the wind—all are in constant motion. Nothing remains unchanged, yet nothing disappears without a trace. A day spent on Teshima becomes a quiet reflection on time, memory, and the beauty of moments that continue to live on even after they have passed.

*Meals, admission tickets to each venue, and additional options are not included in the tour price. *The Teshima Art Museum, island sites, and the ferry are generally closed on Tuesdays (if Tuesday is a national holiday, the closure is moved to the following day). On the first Tuesday of each month, the ferry is reserved exclusively for the transport of hazardous materials, and regular passengers and vehicles are not permitted on board; if the schedule changes, this is moved to the following Thursday. Please note that Hari Factory is open only on select days and visits may be unavailable depending on its operating schedule.
