Overview
Teshima, located in the waters of the Seto Inland Sea, is an island where contemporary art, nature, and daily life quietly intertwine. Unlike the world-renowned art island Naoshima, Teshima offers a gentler, rural atmosphere, where terraced rice fields, fishing villages, springs, and forests remain an integral part of everyday life.
The highlight of your journey is the Teshima Art Museum, perched on a hill overlooking the Seto Inland Sea. The space, created by architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito, features neither showcases nor explanatory plaques. Light, wind, and the sound of rain enter through two large openings in the ceiling, while tiny droplets of water slowly glide across the floor. Here, the boundaries between architecture, nature, and art dissolve, offering guests a unique experience in which they themselves become part of the space.
You will also visit “Les Archives du Cœur” by Christian Boltanski, where heartbeats from around the world are collected, the tranquil “Whispering Forest,” an art space in a former needle factory, and Teshima Yokoo House, where the fantastic world of Tadanori Yokoo unfolds—each artwork scattered across the island, awaiting discovery.
Lunch is served at a venue with breathtaking views of the Seto Inland Sea. Enjoy the seasonal flavors characteristic of this region while admiring the tranquil sea and islands.
In the afternoon, head to the Karato area. Among the terraced rice fields descending to the sea—a signature landscape of Teshima—you will also discover the island’s history and nature, which serve as a backdrop for its art. The light of Setouchi, changing with the seasons and weather, beautifully illuminates not only the artworks but the entire island.

Key Features
- Teshima Art Museum — Architecture in the shape of a drop of water. In 2010, architect Ryue Nishizawa and artist Rei Naito jointly created a concrete shell measuring approximately 40×60 meters without a single column.
- The Pulse of the World Vault — Since 2008, French artist Christian Boltanski has been collecting heartbeats from people around the world, which are now preserved forever in a small building on Karato Beach.
- Whispering Forest — Countless wind chimes swaying in the breeze. A 2016 work: Boltanski installed about 400 wind chimes in the forest on the slope of Mount Danyama.
- Hari Factory — Two former industrial buildings preserving the memory of postwar Japan. Industrial heritage meets creativity, creating one of Teshima’s most unique locations.
- Teshima Yokoo House — Life and death, separated by red glass. In 2013, artist Tadanori Yokoo and architect Yuko Nagayama restored a traditional house in Ieura to create this museum.
- Karato Rice Terraces — The Karato terraces and the sea panorama near the Teshima Art Museum embody an island where world-class art meets the leisurely pace of island life.

Visit the Teshima Art Museum—one of the most unusual contemporary art spaces in Japan. Through two large openings in the roof, wind, sunlight, and the sounds of nature enter the space, while droplets of water gradually appear and move across the smooth floor—part of Rei Naito’s renowned work “Matrix.” After removing your shoes, you can spend time in the silence of this space, observing the light, water, and subtle changes in the environment.
Then head to the Karato-hama coast, where Christian Boltanski’s installation “Les Archives du Cœur” is located. Here, recordings of heartbeats from people around the world are preserved. Visitors can not only listen to these unique sounds of life, but also, if they wish, record their own heartbeat, becoming part of a constantly growing archive of human memory. - 14:00 Lunch

Continue your journey to Mount Danzan, where Christian Boltanski’s installation “Whispering Forest” is hidden among the trees. Thousands of bells sway on the branches, softly responding to every breath of wind. Ribbons bearing the names of loved ones, left by visitors from around the world, are attached to them. Their barely audible ringing becomes the voice of memory and an invisible link between presence and absence. This work forms a conceptual pair with the “Archives of Heartbeats,” continuing the artist’s reflection on life, time, and memory.
Next, visit Teshima Yokoo House in the Ieura district. Created by the artist Tadanori Yokoo, this space unites art, architecture, and the old house itself. Red glass tints the surrounding landscape in surreal hues, and each room reveals the artist’s meditations on life, death, memory, and rebirth. Here, reality and imagination intertwine, turning a walk through the house into a journey through the author’s inner world. - 17:30 Karato Terraced Rice Fields and Panorama
Enjoy panoramic views of the terraced rice fields of Karato and island landscapes stretching out to the sea. This is also the perfect time for photography. - 18:40 Ferry from Ieura Port
Departure from Ieura Port. On the ferry across the Seto Inland Sea, you will return to Uno Port, enjoying the island landscapes of Setouchi. Guests may choose to return from Teshima Island at 14:00 or arrange a transfer to Naoshima Island. - 19:19 Arrival at Uno Port

The name Teshima can be translated as "island of abundance." Its source is the pure spring water born on the slopes of Mount Dan. Among the islands of the Seto Inland Sea, where rice fields are rare, it is this water that for centuries has nourished the terraced rice paddies that have become the symbol of the island.
On Teshima, water takes many forms. In the Teshima Art Museum, it seems to be born from the very floor, slowly gathering into droplets and then disappearing again. On the Karato shore, a small pavilion carefully preserves recordings of heartbeats from people around the world. And in the forests of Mount Dan, the wind touches bells inscribed with the names of those who are no longer here.
Spring water, the beating of the heart, the sound of the wind—all are in constant motion. Nothing remains unchanged, yet nothing disappears without a trace. A day spent on Teshima becomes a quiet reflection on time, memory, and the beauty of moments that continue to live on even after they have passed.

*Meals, admission tickets to each venue, and additional options are not included in the tour price. *The Teshima Art Museum, island sites, and the ferry are generally closed on Tuesdays (if Tuesday is a national holiday, the closure is moved to the following day). On the first Tuesday of each month, the ferry is reserved exclusively for the transport of hazardous materials, and regular passengers and vehicles are not permitted on board; if the schedule changes, this is moved to the following Thursday. Please note that Hari Factory is open only on select days and visits may be unavailable depending on its operating schedule.
