Takachiho — the cradle of myths

Journey through mythical Takachiho: the gorge and shrines where the world of Japanese myths comes alive

The place where the sun returns

Where the Light Returns — Takachiho, the Source of Myth

In the morning, you leave Kumamoto, cross the Aso ridge, and venture deep into the mountains of Takachiho. The air grows cooler, mist rises from the depths of the gorges, and ancient cedars cast soft shadows over the hidden paths. Here, nature seems closer to the realm of the gods than anywhere else in Japan.

According to the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, it was here that the sun goddess Amaterasu hid herself in the heavenly cave, plunging the world into darkness. To restore the light, the gods gathered at the cave, holding a festival with dance and laughter, and Amaterasu emerged once more to greet the world. The Amano Iwato shrine, the sacred cave Amano Yasugawara, and the stones left by pilgrims still preserve the memory of this legend.

As evening falls in the cedar grove of Takachiho Shrine, the sacred kagura dance has echoed for centuries, telling the story of the disappearance and return of the light. Here, these myths are not seen as distant history: they live on in the landscape, in rituals, and in the memory of the people.

Takachiho is a place where Japanese mythology takes tangible form, and the journey becomes an encounter with one of Japan’s most ancient spiritual landscapes.
