Himeji — Harmony of Castle and Garden
Himeji Castle, Koko-en Gardens — a journey through the beauty and history of the castle town
WHITE HERON CASTLE
White Heron — beauty that has withstood the test of time
Himeji Castle is a castle that never had to go to war.
For more than four centuries, the city at its walls endured fires, earthquakes, and wartime air raids. Yet the snow-white main keep survived, and its walls still reflect the light just as they did centuries ago.
A labyrinth of gates and passages, loopholes, stone fortifications, and an intricate defense system were created in anticipation of battle. But despite its impregnability, the castle never became the site of a real fight.
To the west of the castle, on the site of former samurai residences, now lies Koko-en Garden—a complex of nine gardens created in the traditions of different eras. Here, while admiring the silhouette of the main keep, you can enjoy a bowl of matcha in the Soju-an teahouse. Stones that once served for defense now frame ponds where carp swim leisurely.
Himeji Castle is called the White Heron Castle for its light, almost floating silhouette above the city. But its story is not about flight. It is about how sometimes the greatest strength lies in remaining. To stand in place and preserve beauty through the centuries.
