Nikko — Sacred Mountains

A journey into the world of nature, Japanese history, and sacred pilgrimage sites

Nikko proverb

“Don’t say ‘magnificent’ until you’ve seen Nikko.”

An ancient Japanese proverb says that the picturesque divine nature of Nikko is truly beautiful. “Kekko” is an old Japanese word meaning “beautiful.” In other words, it is the highest praise—to say that one cannot see a truly beautiful landscape without seeing Nikko.

During the Edo period, the shoguns transformed this mountain sanctuary—centered around the Toshogu Shrine, where Tokugawa Ieyasu was deified—into one of the country’s spiritual centers. Even centuries later, the mist-shrouded cedar forests, the scarlet Shinkyo Bridge, and the gilded shrine pavilions continue to stir the senses of all who come here.
