Calligraphy in a Zen temple

Personal meeting with one of Japan’s leading contemporary calligraphers in a secluded Zen temple closed to the public.

  • Duration: 120 minutes
  • Location: Kyoto
  • Capacity: from 1 to 8 guests
  • From: On request

About This Experience

In a secluded Zen temple, usually closed to visitors, you will be welcomed by one of Japan’s leading contemporary calligraphers.

This is not a calligraphy lesson, but a rare opportunity to experience its spiritual essence and artistic depth.

In silence, the ink is ground, the breath gradually evens out, and the first stroke appears on the pristine sheet. In this moment, the mastery, the inner state of the calligrapher, and the surrounding space become one. Before your eyes, dots and lines merge into a single gesture, and the character becomes the embodiment of thought and breath.

After the demonstration, you will have the opportunity to converse with the master. You will learn about the choice of paper, ink, and brushes, the significance of emptiness in Japanese aesthetics, and the philosophy underlying the art of calligraphy. The master will be delighted to answer your questions.

If you wish, the calligrapher can create a personalized work for you—with your name, a meaningful phrase, or a character symbolizing an important event in your life. Once fully dried, the piece can be mounted as a scroll or framed (by prior arrangement).

The experience takes place in a private Zen temple in Kyoto, closed to the general public. Surrounded by seasonal gardens and historic architecture, it offers the perfect setting for contemplation, inner peace, and deep immersion in Japanese culture.

At the request of the master and host, the calligrapher’s name, the temple’s name, and actual photographs are not published publicly. This information is provided exclusively to confirmed guests, making the experience truly private and exclusive.
