About This Experience

East of the Kamo River lies the Miyagawa-chō district—one of Kyoto’s five remaining geisha quarters, where age-old hanamachi traditions still thrive among narrow cobbled streets and traditional wooden houses.

Here stands a private o-chaya—a traditional teahouse whose doors usually open only to regular guests by recommendation. Today, you are offered a rare opportunity to cross this threshold and glimpse a world that for centuries remained hidden from outsiders.

In the tatami room, you will be welcomed by a geiko or maiko, who will offer you a bowl of matcha prepared according to the finest Kyoto hospitality. Beneath the apparent simplicity of this moment lie years of training in the arts of dance, music, conversation, and etiquette—the very essence of hanamachi culture.

After the tea ceremony, a performance by a geiko or maiko awaits you. To the sound of the shamisen, the graceful movements of Kyoto dance come to life, while in relaxed conversation, the seasonal traditions and unique aspects of the flower districts are revealed. You will also have the chance to take part in traditional zashiki-asobi—parlor games that have entertained guests in Kyoto teahouses for generations.

This evening offers a rare chance to experience not a staged performance for tourists, but the authentic culture of Kyoto’s hanamachi from within. In the quiet of the tatami room, far from the city’s bustle, one of Japan’s most exclusive and refined worlds is revealed.
